about

Ben Lumsdaine is a drummer with an old school work ethic and long list of credits as a live performer and studio musician racked up at a young age. Versatile in Rock, Jazz and Americana, he manages to be in demand even though the archetypal musician-for-hire is essentially an obsolete position. Ben shares academic credentials with some of the most respected musicians in the world, but luckily for society his creative impulses are too weird and strong to model a career after Kenny Aronoff or Peter Erskine, his fellow alumni. He could though.

As a kid and beyond, Ben cut his teeth in the grassroots working musicians milieu emanating from somewhere between Indianapolis and Nashville, with the notorious energetic vortex of Bloomington, Indiana supporting formal training as well as inspiring his most non-traditional work. That's what these recordings are, his most out-there explorations. A human doesn't spend that much time thinking about music without constructing a philosophy of sound. The need to define and manipulate the innate phonic stuff becomes a compulsion. Using primitive tools for recording and signal processing leads to elaborate systems of microphones, tape machines, amplifiers and guitar pedals to create wave after wave of filtered echoes, this is what happened to him.

The only drums on these self made 4 track cassette recordings come from a Roland TR-55. The other sounds come from various junk keyboards, an electric organ and a Fender Rhodes electric piano which is technically a percussion instrument. Loose centered poly-echoes informed by the regular suspects of Minimalism are evident, but this is free from clinical redundancy and also lacks 60s drug spiritualism. Some flavors of electric Miles bubble up but the sound-world here is more like a Joe Meek sci-fi environment. Obvious basement laboratory excitement keeps the proceedings human, as spontaneous lyric melodies acknowledge intergalactic wonder from the earthly perspective.
